Longtime Ferris State University hockey staff member Dave Cencer has taken on the role of assistant coach for the Bulldogs. Cencer, previously the program's coordinator of athletic performance, steps into this position following a new NCAA rule change that permits a third assistant coach in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey. In addition to his new responsibilities, he will work with the team's goaltenders.
FSU head coach Bob Daniels expressed enthusiasm about Cencer's appointment: "We're excited to move Dave into this role and he's highly-deserving to be labeled as an assistant coach," said Daniels. "He's been extremely important to our program for many years and will play an even greater role moving forward both in terms of on-ice coaching and recruiting."
Cencer is set to begin his 18th year with the FSU coaching staff during the 2023-24 season. He has led off-ice efforts as the strength and conditioning coach while also serving as video coordinator. His tenure at Ferris State Hockey includes implementing sports science technology like First Beat Technologies for monitoring heart rate, energy expenditure, and recovery.
In his career, Cencer has managed all aspects of on-ice and off-ice strength training and conditioning for the Bulldogs. He holds a master's degree in exercise science with certifications from NSCA (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) and USA Weightlifting. In 2016, he was appointed to the Michigan Advisory Board of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and has presented at both state and national conferences.
Beyond Ferris State, Cencer contributed to the Chicago Blackhawks organization during their Stanley Cup-winning 2009-2010 season. A competitive cyclist, he resides in Cadillac with his wife Anna and their family. He earned a bachelor's degree from Franciscan University.
The Bulldogs are entering this season with one of college hockey's most experienced coaching staffs. Head Coach Bob Daniels begins his 32nd season leading FSU, Associate Head Coach Drew Famulak embarks on his 32nd year on staff, Assistant Coach Mark Kaufman starts his 19th year at Ferris State across two tenures dating back to 1992, while Cencer marks his 18th year with the team.
