East Grand Rapids Elects Mayor, Three Commissioners

Elected

City of East Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on Nov. 6.

On Tuesday, East Grand Rapids residents elected Katie Favale as the City’s new mayor along with three commissioners.

Favale, who has resided in the City for 9 years, has served on the City Commission for two years as a First Ward representative. She earned 2,358 votes in her contest with eight-year veteran and incumbent Amna Seibold’s 1,531 votes.

“I am looking forward to a great relationship with City staff and working together to ensure that East Grand Rapids remains a wonderful place to live, work and play,” said Favale. “In the next four years, we will enhance quality of life for residents and pursue initiatives to take our city into the future.”

In addition to this leadership change, the election brought three commissioners — two new and one returning. Karey Hamrick will preserve her seat in the second ward after earning 705 votes to opponent Sean Sperling’s 477.

Kris Pachla and John Arendshorst will become the new first and third ward representatives, succeeding Chad Zagel and Brian Miller respectively. Pachla earned his seat against Jeffrey Olsen while Arendshorst defeated Phil Rewerts.

As Favale ran against Seibold as a current commissioner, Favale’s seat will be vacated when the mayor and commissioners transition into their new roles. The City Commission will then a appoint a new commissioner through an open application process.

The elected officials will be sworn in at the Monday, Dec. 2 City Commission meeting.
