Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, who represents Michigan’s 3rd district in the U.S. Congress, has issued a series of statements on social media regarding the ongoing government shutdown and its impact on health care costs and federal oversight.

On October 4, 2025, Scholten warned about potential financial consequences for American families under current Republican proposals. She stated, "Make no mistake: health care costs are going to SKYROCKET under the Republicans’ plan, and the government shutdown is only making things worse. Your family could be burdened with thousands of dollars in extra costs thanks to their reckless governance."

Later that same day, she addressed concerns about misinformation related to the shutdown. In her post from October 4, Scholten wrote, "With so much confusing and conflicting information being spread about the government shutdown, I’m committed to sharing the facts — and ONLY the facts. Make sure you’re subscribed to my weekly newsletter to get the most up-to-date resources and info about the shutdown. Visit"

The following morning, on October 5, Scholten highlighted issues affecting government transparency during the shutdown. She posted, "To add to the list of egregious government shutdown-related concerns, it’s been brought to my attention that websites of many Inspectors General (offices specifically targeted to root out waste, fraud, and abuse in our government) are BLANK. Nowhere to be found – not even in"

Scholten has served as a U.S. Representative for Michigan’s 3rd District since 2023 after replacing Peter Meijer. She was born in Grand Rapids in 1982 and continues to reside there. Scholten graduated from Gordon College with a BA in 2004 before earning her JD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2011.
