Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, who represents Michigan’s 3rd district in the U.S. House of Representatives, posted a series of statements on her social media account addressing both community observances and ongoing federal issues.
On October 1, 2025, Scholten extended greetings to those observing Yom Kippur in West Michigan and beyond. She wrote: "Wishing all those observing in West Michigan and across the world a meaningful Yom Kippur. G'mar Chatima Tovah!"
The following day, on October 2, she addressed the ongoing government shutdown with a pointed critique of political opponents. In her post she stated: "Q: Why is the government shut down? A: Trump and House Republicans refuse to give AN INCH on making healthcare more affordable for the American people."
Later that same day, Scholten highlighted concerns about Coast Guard personnel affected by the funding lapse. She explained her legislative efforts to address their situation: "More than 40,000 Coasties are working without the certainty of pay for the duration of this government shutdown. My bill, the Pay Our Coast Guard Parity Act, would ensure that they receive pay on time, as members of other branches of the military do when funding lapses."
Hillary Scholten has represented Michigan’s 3rd District since 2023 after succeeding Peter Meijer. She was born in Grand Rapids in 1982 and continues to reside there. Scholten holds a bachelor’s degree from Gordon College (2004) and earned her law degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2011.
