Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, who represents Michigan’s 3rd district in the U.S. Congress, recently used her social media platform to express concerns about proposed legislative changes affecting clean water protections and to criticize actions taken by some of her Congressional colleagues.

On July 22, 2025, Scholten posted: "We need to enhance and expand our clean water protections, not roll them back as my Republican colleagues may want to do through the PERMIT Act. I’m here in Washington fighting for you, West Michigan."

Later that day, she addressed recent developments in Congressional proceedings: "The most extreme Republicans *checks notes* flew Members of Congress out on the taxpayer dime before deciding to hold up our work for the second week in a row. Why? They want to hide from the Epstein votes. What are they trying to hide from the American public?" This post came at a time when legislative activity was delayed for a second consecutive week.

In another message published on July 22, Scholten highlighted historical efforts related to freshwater conservation: "The preservation of America’s freshwater systems didn’t happen by coincidence — the Great Lakes were, in fact, once declared to be dead. Fortunately, under the Clean Water Act, the State of Michigan consciously decided to take our precious waters into our own hands. The PERMIT"

Hillary Scholten has served as U.S. Representative for Michigan's 3rd District since replacing Peter Meijer in 2023 and is based in Grand Rapids—her birthplace and current residence (FACTS 1 & 3). She holds degrees from Gordon College and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (FACT 4).
