Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, who represents Michigan’s 3rd district in the U.S. Congress, has used her social media platform to criticize the federal administration's handling of SNAP funding and President Trump’s role in withholding those funds.
On November 4, 2025, Scholten wrote, "Due to the Admin’s negligent delay in releasing SNAP funds, 42 million Americans — including 1.4 Michiganders — are feeling the pain. Funding ran out this weekend, and Michigan officials and experts believe that folks may not see their benefits until Wednesday at the earliest."
The following day, she addressed President Trump directly: "I have a message for President Trump: the money you are withholding from the SNAP program is not yours to withhold. It belongs to the American taxpayers. Release the funds now."
In another post on November 6, Scholten added: "Now, it’s been a few years since I’ve practiced as an attorney, but a basic tenet of our legal system is this: defying a court order is breaking the law. That’s exactly what President Trump is doing by withholding funding specifically allocated for SNAP emergencies."
Scholten has served in Congress since replacing Peter Meijer in 2023 and currently resides in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She holds a BA from Gordon College and earned her JD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2011.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides food assistance to millions of low-income Americans each year. Delays or interruptions in its funding can have significant impacts on recipients nationwide.
