Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, representing Michigan's 3rd district since 2023, has recently shared her thoughts on significant historical events and current political issues via social media. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1982, Scholten holds a BA from Gordon College and a JD from the University of Maryland. She replaced former U.S. Congress member Peter Meijer in her role.

On May 4, 2025, Scholten commemorated a pivotal event in American history by marking the anniversary of the first Freedom Ride in 1961. In her tweet, she highlighted the contributions of former Congressman John Lewis, one of the original riders: "Today marks the anniversary of the first Freedom Ride in 1961 — a monumental moment in the Civil Rights Movement. Former Congressman John Lewis was one of those original 13 riders, and I’m thinking of his words today and everyday: 'Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help'".

Later that day, Scholten addressed economic concerns regarding plans proposed by Trump and House Republicans. On May 4th she tweeted about their economic plan stating: "Trump and House Republicans’ economic plan is BAD for our economy." She expressed her opposition to proposed funding cuts during a recent @TransportDems hearing: @HouseGOP is trying to cut $10 billion of funding. At this week’s @TransportDems hearing, I fought for everyday Americans and the crucial infrastructure that keeps our roads, bridges, waterways, and skies safe."

On May 5th, Scholten visited Cherry Health in Grand Rapids to engage with leaders at Michigan's largest Federally Qualified Health Center. Her visit was aimed at discussing Medicaid funding concerns as she noted: "Cherry Health is Michigan’s largest Federally Qualified Health Center and a staple in our West Michigan community." She assured them of her commitment to opposing proposed Medicaid cuts: "It was great to speak with leaders and providers at their Grand Rapids location today and remind them all that I’m pushing back on proposed Medicaid funding cuts".
