Hillary Scholten reflects on civil rights movement during Selma-Montgomery visit

Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, who has represented Michigan's 3rd District since 2023, recently shared her experiences and reflections during a visit to Selma and Montgomery. This visit was in honor of the 60th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday, a pivotal event in the Civil Rights Movement.

On March 8, 2025, Scholten emphasized the importance of the judiciary in shaping civil rights. She stated, "We are a nation of laws. Our civil rights journey through Selma and Montgomery continued today by examining the role that the courts have played in both preventing and ensuring justice."

Later that day, she expressed support for her constituents back home who were advocating for democratic values. On March 8, 2025, she tweeted, "I applaud the folks back home in MI-03 who are bravely standing up today to march for democracy, freedom, and the essential programs we rely on to sustain our livelihoods. As I spend my weekend in Selma & Montgomery to honor the 60th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday..."

The following day on March 9, 2025, Scholten shared her experience at Bethel Baptist Church in Alabama. She remarked on its historical significance with these words: "It was so powerful and sacred to worship at Bethel Baptist Church today, a cornerstone of the Civil Rights Movement. As the faith leaders of the Civil Rights Movement taught us..."
