The City of Grand Rapids is set to kick off its curbside yard waste collection service on Monday, April 1. According to a city announcement, "Curbside yard waste is collected on the same day as refuse collection through the second Saturday in December, weather permitting." Residents are reminded that "All yard waste needs to be placed at the refuse collection point by 7 a.m."
This curbside yard waste collection service is a pay-for option provided by the Department of Public Works. Those interested in signing up for the service can do so by visiting grandrapidsmi.gov/Services/Yard-Waste-Services.
In addition to the curbside collection service, the City also offers a year-round yard waste drop-off site for residents who prefer to compost their yard waste free-of-charge. The drop-off site, located at 2001 Butterworth St. SW, is open from Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents are required to bring ID for proof of residence, and yard waste must be loose or in a paper bag as plastic bags are not allowed.
Furthermore, residents visiting the drop-off site can benefit from free woodchips and 2,000 yards of compost available at no cost. Residents are permitted to pick up to one cubic yard of material once per year on a first-come basis on Saturdays from Memorial Day through July. The operations at the site are managed by the organics and composting vendor We Care Denali, who work towards turning yard waste into high-quality compost.
