The annual Metro High School Police Academy got underway yesterday. This week Officer Meeuwsen is assigned to the Metro High School Police Academy. The academy provides a free week of instruction to high school students who have an interest in criminal justice that is based off of the current Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards Police Academy.
The program began in 1996 as a cooperative effort between the Grandville, Kentwood and Wyoming Police Departments and was originally called the Tri-Cities High School Police Academy. It has grown to include many other agencies and serve a wider audience. Several departments have even started their own mini high school programs in addition to this cooperative effort.
We appreciate the twenty students that showed up at zero dark thirty to being the week on Monday morning and are looking forward to celebrating their graduation on Friday.
