City of East Grand Rapids Invites Community to Participate in Prescription Drug Take Back Day
The City of East Grand Rapids is encouraging community members to properly dispose of unused and expired prescription medications at its Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 30.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents and community members may drop off unused and expired medications in the lobby of the East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department at 770 Lakeside Drive SE. The department, in partnership with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, is permitted to collect a wide variety of prescription medications, including opioids. Other drop-off locations restrict the types of medications they can collect and dispose.
“Properly disposing of prescription medications is critical to the safety of our community and environment,” said East Grand Rapids Public Safety Chief Mark Herald. “By participating in the take back program, we help decrease the chance of medication misuse or abuse and prevent these medications from entering our environment. Residents can safely and anonymously drop off these medications.
“While this service is offered throughout the year, the spring and fall take back days serve as great reminders as we transition into new seasons.”
If residents cannot participate Saturday, the drop box in the Public Safety lobby is available for prescription medication disposal 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The East Grand Rapids Public Safety Department also hosts a Prescription Drug Take Back Day in the fall.
The spring and fall events are part of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Each one typically yields nearly 200 pounds of medications. Last October, East Grand Rapids was one of 238 collection sites in Michigan and helped contribute to 22,833 total pounds of medications collected in the state.
