EGR Offering Pay Increase for Lifeguards

Lifeguard

City of East Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on Feb 28.

In an effort to recruit lifeguards for its two community pools, the City of East Grand Rapids has increased starting pay to $15 an hour and is waiving the $250 fee for the lifeguard certification class.

The 39% pay increase – up from $10.76 an hour – was recently approved by the City Commission for all seasonal part-time positions and goes into effective March 1. The City will continue to provide a signing bonus of $200, paid lifeguard training and additional premium of $1.50 an hour for early morning and late evening shifts.

“By raising the pay for lifeguards, we hope we can recruit and retain team members who enjoy serving others in a part-time capacity,” Parks and Recreation Director Derek Melville said. “Our two- and four-hour lifeguard shifts are perfect for college students, stay-at-home parents and retirees who are looking for fun and flexibility. These new lifeguards will help us continue to provide meaningful recreational opportunities for the community through a variety of programs.”

For applicants who need lifeguard certification, the Parks and Recreation Department will work with them to identify a local American Red Cross course that fits their schedule. Individuals 15 and older who agree to work at one of the City’s two community pools part time are eligible to enroll in the course for free. The City operates the pools at East Grand Rapids High School and Wealthy Elementary School.

City staff in January began updating the wage structure for seasonal part-time positions to address hiring challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and other economic factors. Before the City Commission approved the 39% pay increase Feb. 21, the City’s wages for seasonal part-time positions last received a significant boost in 2018, which was a 10.8% hike.
