City of East Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on Jan. 21.
Chief of Police Eric Payne was presented with an award today by the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE). Chief Payne was recognized for his "outstanding contributions and dedicated service to the people of Grand Rapids, through your selfless collaboration and committed interests to making sure the diversity of our citizens' varied backgrounds and circumstances are appreciated and positively valued."
Lieutenant Terry Dixon, GRPD, is the President of the West Michigan Chapter of NOBLE, and was excited to see Chief Payne receive the award. "It's great for the Chief, great for the department, and great for the City," Dixon said. Chief Payne was extremely proud of the recognition. "I'm honored and humbled to be recognized by such a great organization and a wonderful group of colleagues," the Chief stated.
Presenting the award was Director of Public Safety for East Grand Rapids, Mark Herald, and NOBLE Regional VP Brenda Goss Andrews (Retired Deputy Chief - Detroit Police Department). VP Andrews congratulated Chief Payne and said that NOBLE was started in 1977 to address crime trends in large urban areas and ensure equity in the administration of justice.
