City of Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on Dec. 4.
The Grand Rapids City Commission this evening unanimously appointed Charles “Max” Frantz to fill the vacant city comptroller position. The city comptroller oversees the City's accounting office, which is responsible for internal audits, payroll, accounts payable and accounting services.
Frantz is a change manager at Amway, where he also serves as a senior financial analyst and treasurer of the company’s political action committee. He is a resident of the city’s Third Ward. He has completed internal audit assignments and focused on improving banking controls. He has seven years of corporate finance experience and a bachelor’s degree in finance from Grand Valley State University.
Frantz was one of two finalists who participated in interviews with the City Commission on Nov. 19. During his interview, he said his decision to apply for the vacancy was rooted in a recent visit he took to the John F. Kennedy Memorial and Museum in Dallas.
“It was a moving experience for me,” Frantz said. “One thing that President Kennedy was famous for saying was that, ‘Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try.’ That just really stuck with me. That is why
I am here, because I believe it’s an honorable and commendable action to come forward and serve one’s community.
“On a more personal front, the comptroller position is a great opportunity for me to continue developing both my leadership and financial abilities.”
Frantz will be sworn into office during a ceremony at 6 p.m. Dec. 17 in the ninth-floor Commission Chambers at City Hall, 300 Monroe Ave. NW. The ceremony will take place before the first City Commission meeting of the new year – set for 7 p.m. Validated parking is available in the Government Center Ramp off Monroe and Ottawa avenues.
The oath of office ceremony and meeting will be shown live in English on Comcast Channel 26, Facebook and YouTube. They also will be streamed live in Spanish HERE.
Grand Rapids voters typically elect the city comptroller to serve a four-year term. Since recently departed City Comptroller Sarah VanderWerff left before her term was to end Dec. 31, 2021, the City Commission was required to appoint a replacement for the remainder of the term.
Frantz will run in the August 2021 city elections to serve out the remainder of the term that expires Dec. 31, 2021.
