CITY OF GRAND RAPIDS: City Kicks Off Holiday Season With Annual Tree Lighting Dec. 6

Christmastree

City of Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on Nov. 26.

The City of Grand Rapids officially kicks off the holiday season Dec. 6 with the annual Christmas tree lighting. The all-ages event is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Rosa Parks Circle, 135 Monroe Center St. NW.

Mayor Rosalynn Bliss and Maranda will light up the tree at 6:27 p.m. They will be joined by emcee Andy Rent of 100.5 The River.

This year’s event features food and drinks, including free hot chocolate from WOTV’s Maranda, cultural booths highlighting how holidays are celebrated around the world, arts and crafts, giveaways and entertainment both on and off the Rosa Parks Circle ice rink. The Western Michigan University and Lake Effect Flurries synchronized skating teams will perform and the Grand Rapids Sled Wings adaptive hockey team will take the ice for an exhibition game.

The fun also will include Santa and Mrs. Claus, Crash from the West Michigan Whitecaps. Members of the Grand Rapids Fire and Police departments will be on hand to show off their vehicles.

We look forward to this event every year,” said Evette Pittman, the City’s special events supervisor. “The community seems to love it, too – with more and more people joining us each year. We’re proud to add to our city’s vibrancy and bring holiday cheer to those who live, work and play in Grand Rapids.”

The event co-sponsors are Charlie and Elizabeth Secchia, Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. and Experience Grand Rapids.

The ice rink will open to public skating at 6:45 p.m. Admission to the ice rink is $1 for those 17 years old and younger and $3 for adults. Skate rental is included with admission. For more information, CLICK HERE.

The Jingle Bell Bridge Run will follow the tree lighting. The free fun run is sponsored by the Lake Michigan Credit Union Bridge Run, RunGR and the City’s Office of Special Events. The 2- to 3-mile route uses sidewalks and trail systems to take participants past holiday lights and decorations. More information is HERE.
