The Grand Rapids City Commission has announced the seven candidates who will be moving forward in the selection process for the Third Ward Commissioner Vacancy. These candidates will participate in a public interview before the Committee on Appointments on February 20. The appointment process has been further detailed to provide transparency and clarity.
The seven candidates who have passed the vetting process and will be considered for the position include individuals who have submitted their biographies and essays. To review these documents, interested parties can visit grandrapidsmi.gov/vacancy.
On February 20, the Committee on Appointments will conduct interviews with the seven applicants in a special meeting scheduled for 1 p.m. Each candidate will have 25 minutes to introduce themselves and respond to a series of interview questions posed by committee members. Following the interviews, the Committee on Appointments will recommend three final candidates to the full City Commission.
The top three candidates will then be interviewed by the full City Commission in a public session on March 5. A decision may be made at the City Commission meeting, which is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on that day.
As a result of these interviews, there are some changes to the meeting schedule. The Public Safety Committee meeting on February 20 and the Economic Development Project Team meeting on March 5 have been canceled to accommodate the interviews.
The City Commission welcomes public comment on the Third Ward Applicants at the February 20 evening meeting or the March 5 afternoon meeting. Comments can also be emailed to cityclerk@grcity.us. The interviews, along with all City Commission and subcommittee meetings, will be broadcasted and live-streamed on Comcast Channel 26 and the City of Grand Rapids Facebook page and YouTube channel.
The vacancy for the Third Ward Commissioner position arose following the resignation of former Commissioner Nathaniel Moody on December 31. The appointment process aims to fill this important role in the Grand Rapids City Commission.
