Grand Rapids City Clerk Joel Hondorp and his team of election professionals are preparing for the upcoming Presidential Primary in the city. Hondorp is urging voters to be informed about the specifics of the election and to "know before you go".
"The Presidential Primary Election is different than other elections," Hondorp explained. "Voters must choose a Democratic or Republican ballot – or if they live in the Kentwood Public Schools District, they may select a non-partisan ballot. The ballot selection does not register the voter to any party."
To accommodate voters, there are three options for casting a vote this year. Voters can choose to vote early in person at an early voting site, vote by mail with an absentee ballot, or go to their precinct on Election Day. Additionally, voters have the choice to vote for a candidate listed on the ballot or to vote for an uncommitted or write-in candidate.
To provide more information about the 2024 election cycle, Hondorp will deliver a briefing at the City Commission's January 9 Committee of the Whole meeting. The briefing will be available for viewing on Comcast Channel 26, as well as live-streamed on the City of Grand Rapids Facebook page and YouTube channel.
For specific details about the election, such as the locations of early voting sites, residents can visit the website www.grandrapidsmi.gov/Residents/Elections. Additionally, voters can verify their registration status, find their precinct location, and apply for an absentee ballot on the website www.michigan.gov/vote.
As the Presidential Primary approaches, Grand Rapids is taking steps to ensure that the election process runs smoothly. By providing clear instructions and resources, City Clerk Joel Hondorp and his team are working to make the voting experience positive for all participants.
