Grand Rapids residents have options for Christmas tree disposal

Grand Rapids residents have two options for the disposal of live-cut Christmas trees after the holidays. The City of Grand Rapids offers a Christmas tree collection program that includes free drop-off disposal and fee-based curbside pickup. This initiative aims to provide environmentally friendly options for tree disposal, with trees being recycled through chipping and composting.

For those who prefer the convenience of drop-off disposal, the City has designated several free drop-off sites available until January 31. According to the City's website, residents can drop off their Christmas trees at the following locations:

Residents also have the option to utilize the City's Compost and Yard Waste Site, which accepts Christmas trees throughout the year. The site operates with winter hours from Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Alternatively, residents can opt for the fee-based curbside pickup program. Public Works will actively collect trees until January 31. However, after this date, residents will need to call and request a collection. To participate in the curbside pickup option, residents must attach a $2.50 City bulk yard waste tag (purple tag) to the Christmas tree and place it in their pickup area by 7 a.m. on the scheduled refuse collection day.

To obtain the required bulk yard waste tags, residents can purchase them at City Hall during business hours or at select local retailers. City Hall, located at 300 Monroe Ave. NW, is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It is important to ensure that Christmas trees placed in the refuse pickup area are properly tagged for collection. The tag must be visible at the time of collection, and residents are advised to make every effort to ensure the tree is easily accessible for collection, without being buried in snow. Before collection, all ornaments, decorations, tinsel, nails, tree stands, and plastic bags must be removed from the tree.

Failure to properly tag the tree may result in a notice of violation and possible fine for the property owner. It is the responsibility of residents to replace lost or stolen tags. Additionally, curbside collection may be delayed in the event of a snowstorm or heavy snowfall.

In conclusion, Grand Rapids residents have the option to either drop off their Christmas trees at designated locations or request fee-based curbside pickup. The City's Christmas tree collection program aims to promote environmentally friendly practices by recycling trees through chipping and composting. By following the guidelines and ensuring proper tagging, residents can efficiently dispose of their Christmas trees while contributing to a greener community.
