Grand Rapids Third Ward City Commissioner Nathaniel Moody has announced his intention to resign from his seat, effective December 31. Moody cited personal reasons for his decision to step down, after serving the residents of Grand Rapids for several years.
Moody was selected by the City Commission in July 2018 to fill the term of former Commissioner David Allen. He won a reelection bid in November 2019, earning another term as the Third Ward City Commissioner. During his tenure, Moody played a crucial role in guiding the commission and the community through challenging times such as the pandemic, economic recovery, and civil unrest.
Reflecting on his time in office, Moody expressed his pride in the progress made in the Third Ward. He highlighted the construction of a new MLK Jr. lodge and fire station as significant investments in the community. Moody stated, "I am hopeful that I contributed to making this community a better place and have faith in the work that the Mayor, Commissioners, City Manager Mark Washington, and staff continue to do."
Mayor Bliss accepted Moody's resignation with regret, praising his wisdom and compassion. She acknowledged his dedication to Grand Rapids and his significant contributions to the community. Bliss expressed her anticipation of Moody's continued engagement with the community in a different capacity.
Throughout his career, Moody has served on various boards and committees, including the Grand Rapids Community College Foundation Board, Grand Rapids Area Association of Pastors, and the Grand Rapids Urban League, among others. His commitment to the community has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades, including the Celebration of Soul Marvin & Malinda Sapp Legacy Award and the United Methodist Community Achievement Award.
Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Moody graduated from Grand Rapids Central High School in 1975. He went on to earn an Associate of Arts Degree from Grand Rapids Junior College and a Mortuary Science Degree from Worsham College in Chicago, Illinois. In 2016, Moody received his Master of Arts Degree from Cornerstone Theological Seminary.
As Moody prepares to step down from his position, Mayor Bliss stated, "Nathaniel's love and passion for this community is unmatched." The City Commission will work with the Mayor, City Clerk, and City Attorney to establish a formal process for filling Moody's seat after the holidays.
While Moody focuses on his family and health, he has reassured the community that he will remain an influential voice. His dedication to Grand Rapids will undoubtedly continue to make a positive impact in the future.
