GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On Friday, June 23, GRPD was recognized by the Michigan chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) as one of two Outstanding Law Enforcement Agencies for 2022 during its annual award luncheon in Lansing. Additionally, GRPD Officer Kaylyn Stephens was recognized as one of four individual recipients of the Outstanding Officer Award for 2022.
In 2022, GRPD made 448 Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) arrests, or on average, more than one per day. Of those arrests, 93 (20%) had a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of over .17, meaning they are classified as “Super Drunk OWI” offenses. Eighteen individuals were also charged with Child Endangerment for having passenger(s) under 18 in the vehicle at the time of their arrest.
Where appropriate, additional charges were also levied. Some of these include: ten individuals were charged with possession of cocaine, 15 were arrested on outstanding warrants or parole/probation violations, and 12 illegally possessed guns were confiscated during these stops.
GRPD logged 146 hours in 2022 using the state’s Office of Highway and Safety Planning grant initiatives to focus on OWI, speeding, and distracted driving enforcement. In total, GRPD made over 7,300 traffic stops during 2022.
“We are honored to receive these awards,” said Chief Eric Winstrom. “They show the dedication and commitment of GRPD officers to keep our community safe.”
