City of Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on July 29.
The next chance for Grand Rapids voters to exercise their right comes Tuesday, Aug. 4 during the primary election. All 76 Grand Rapids voting precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
City Clerk Joel Hondorp says the Primary Election is a nominating election for certain federal, state and county offices. Both the Democratic and Republican candidates are listed on the same ballot. Voters must either vote for candidates in the Democratic column or the Republican column. They are prohibited to cross between columns.
Residents 18 or older are automatically registered to vote when they make a transaction with the Secretary of State. They may register to vote by mail up to 15 days before an election and or in person at the City Clerk’s Office within 14 days of the election up to Election Day. Proof of residency is required.
Voters are reminded to check www.michigan.gov/vote to verify their voter registration, view a sample ballot, find their polling location and check the status of their Absentee Ballot.

To ensure the health and safety of voters and poll workers during in-person voting for 2020 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, each precinct will follow guidelines set by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Kent County Health Department.
City Clerk’s Office will do the following:
- Provide all poll workers with face shields, masks and disposable gloves.
- Regularly wipe down common touchpoints with disinfectant.
- Offer hand sanitizer to all voters upon entering and exiting the voting location.
- Mark the ground with stickers to ensure voters can adhere to social distancing protocols.
- Provide access to bathrooms that have soap and water available for handwashing.
- Please use the hand sanitizer that is provided upon entering and exiting.
- Review sample ballots in advance of coming to vote. You can even mark it and bring it with you. Knowing your selections in advance of arriving will speed up the process and allow you to exit the facility faster.
- Bring a valid ID.
Michigan voters in November 2018 approved Proposal 3, which allows all voters to cast an absentee ballot.
The City Clerk’s office will be open to issue Absentee Ballots and to accept voter registrations on Saturday, August 1 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Voters may either go to the 2nd Floor of City Hall, 300 Monroe NW or to Election Central located at 201 Market SW.
Voters who have received their Absentee Ballots are encouraged to return them as soon as possible. Ballots can be dropped off at City Hall, Election Central, 201 Market (M-F, Noon – 5 p.m.) or in the drop box located at 300 Ottawa NW directly across from City Hall.
