City of Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on March 11

The Grand Rapids Police Department and Grand Rapids Fire Department are inviting the community to learn more about the proposed use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in their public safety efforts.

UAVs are considered to be a valuable tool for public safety throughout the country. The departments will hold presentations on the proposed public safety program in each of the city’s three wards. The events will highlight how the departments can leverage UAV technology for a safer community and better outcomes.

The presentations will include information about the role of UAVs in public safety, how they can be used as first responders and how the departments would ensure privacy and individual liberties for community members. Attendees also will have the opportunity to ask questions and offer feedback on the proposed program.

The presentation schedule is:

  • Second Ward – 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 18 at GRPS University, 1440 Fuller Ave. NE
  • First Ward – 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19 at Goei Center, 818 Butterworth St. SW
  • Third Ward – 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19 at Alger Middle School, 921 Alger St. SE
The events are free and open to the public. Community members may attend any presentation regardless of which ward they live in.
