City of Grand Rapids issued the following announcement on Oct. 12.

City Treasurer John Globensky has been named a GoldenGov: City Executive of the Year. Globensky is among eight city officials, city managers and mayors nationwide to earn the LocalSmart Award from StateScoop, a public sector cybersecurity media company.

Globensky was honored for leading the implementation of GR PayIt – a digital platform that has driven the modernization of City services and overall citizen experience. GR PayIt allows residents and others to pay for multiple City services using a single account. It also has made government more efficient by increasing dollars collected by more than 278 percent and decreasing checks to process by 100,000.

Globensky reports more than a 326 percent increase in residents using automated payments for City refuse service and a 15 percent decrease in walk-in payments. In total, community members have created more than 112,000 GR PayIt accounts since the platform’s launch in September 2017.

Flexibility is key for city government leaders across when launching technologies, Globensky said.

“We have to adapt as fast as technology is adapting,” he said. “We just have to be prepared for it and we have to open our minds to it.”

The LocalSmart Awards feature inspirational people and projects making government more efficient and effective. StateScoop received more than 100 nominations of the most impressive people and projects working in government today.

“My StateScoop team and I wanted to highlight the important work being done in local government across the country with the LocalSmart Awards,” said Goldy Kamali, founder and CEO of Scoop News Group. “Our esteemed journalists and award-winning editors cover the state and local IT leadership community every day and have developed a very engaged and deeply connected community. We received overwhelming excitement for the LocalSmart awards and gathered more than 100,000 votes. We are so happy to celebrate and highlight the leaders in that community this year.”
