How did Kent County-based Committee to Elect Mark Huizenga become the biggest spender in Q1 2021?

Committee to Elect Mark Huizenga spent the most out of all the political committees based in cities associated with Kent County during the first quarter of 2021, according to the Michigan Department of State.

The committee paid $40,900 to three vendors.

The largest expense was $40,300 paid to Lansing-based Friends of Mark Huizenga for contribution rollover.

The second largest political spend from a committee operating in a city within Kent County during the quarter came from Albert Majority Fund. It spent $10,625 during the time period on four different vendors.

What’s known as “dark money,” which comes from political non-profits and shell corporations, has greatly increased expenditures and donations in recent elections to record-breaking highs.

Total political expenditures in the 2022 elections amounted to more than $444 million.
