The City of Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Whitewater (GRWW) are edging closer to the construction phase of the Grand River Restoration Project as they seek qualifications for construction management, according to a press release.
"For the last decade, we have been diligently working through the design and engineering phase to deliver a project that restores the spirit of our iconic rapids," Steve Heacock, president and CEO of Grand Rapids Whitewater, said. "It has been a painstaking and meticulous process, but we have not lost sight of our vision. To select a construction management firm and shift our conversations from design and development to construction and implementation is very exciting."
His sentiments about the progress of the project were shared by Mayor Rosalynn Bliss.
"We are so excited to be making progress and taking steps for construction to begin in the Grand River," Bliss said. "Securing the remaining permits and the selection of a qualified construction manager to implement this work are the next big milestones in the process to achieve our vision of creating a river that everyone can enjoy."
The City of Grand Rapids and GRWW revealed on April 6 that they are soliciting a request for qualifications from firms to provide management services for the construction of the Grand River Restoration Project, from just upstream of Bridge Street to the Fulton Street Bridge, according to the press release.
"The project includes removal of four concrete low-head dams and the construction of in-channel features," the press release said. "Construction features could include waves and riffles to increase hydraulic diversity and improve aquatic habitat. The project will also augment bridge scour protection and improve riparian shorelines and access points."
