Bobbie Butler is planning to retire after 44 years of service on behalf of the Grand Rapids Housing Commission.

Butler has been an advocate for the organization since being appointed in 1977, according to a news release from the City of Grand Rapids.

"Commissioner Butler has used her intellect, insight, and experience to further the Grand Rapids Housing Commission mission to provide affordable housing opportunities for this community," Lindsey Reams, Housing Commission executive director, said. "She has represented the Housing Commission as a champion for housing equity in the local, state, regional, and national spheres. We are grateful for all she has contributed to the agency, the people we serve, and the Grand Rapids community, and wish her continued health, happiness, and prosperity."

Butler worked with three commission executive directors, five mayors, and numerous city managers during her career, the release said.

"The lack of affordable housing is a national issue," Mark Washington, Grand Rapids city manager, said. "Grand Rapids has not been immune to that over the years, but Mrs. Butler’s commitment to the people of this community has ensured we’ve continued to make positive progress in the fight to ensure everyone has access to safe and stable housing."

Washington added that Butler had a tremendous impact on many citizens in the city, and her lengthy career is a reminder to everyone in public service what it means to be an advocate of the community.

Butler worked with the commission to establish a transitional housing program known as Hope Community, which aids homeless women with minor children, according to the release.

Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalynn Bliss gave Butler an official proclamation during the March 15 meeting of the Grand Rapids City Commission in honor of her career, which is expected to conclude at the end of the month, according to the city.
