Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on announced a change in name for a Michigan arts and culture agency on Feb. 11.
The agency is changing its name from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs to the Michigan Arts and Culture Council (MACC), Whitmer's office said in a release.
"For more than 30 years, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs has supported and nurtured Michigan's vibrant arts and culture-stimulating Michigan's economy, investing in communities, and enhancing quality of life," Whitmer said in the release. "The new name reflects the leadership role the Council plays in ensuring that every citizen and community in Michigan enjoys the civic, economic and educational benefits of arts and culture. The MACC will help us continue putting Michiganders first and building a state where every working family can thrive."
MACC's purpose is to create and nurture artistic and cultural endeavors throughout Michigan by partnering with organizations, industries, nonprofits and local governments, Whitmer's office said.
"Arts and culture have a widespread impact on the economy and enrich the lives of all Michiganders," Gretchen Gonzales Davidson, chair of MACC, said in the release. "As the MI Arts and Culture Council continues to work on our mission of supporting all zip codes in our great state, we want a name to be proud of. We are grateful to the Governor and her administration for their support and deep understanding of the arts and culture sector and the impact we have on our communities."
Arts and culture help entice business investors and talented individuals who help enrich local environments, Whitmer's office said. Holland, Michigan, for example, is using a $215,649 grant from MACC to work with local schools, organizations and the private sector to create quality programming, exhibits and events to improve the lives of its citizens.
