The music of Antonin Dvořák and others will be among the works presented during Grand Rapids Symphony's "New World Symphony" concert next weekend.
Dvořák, a Czech composer had already achieved worldwide recognition when he came to the United States in 1892. His Symphony No.9 "From the New World" with be featured next weekend, along with the music of James M. Stephenson, Aaron Copeland and Nina Shekhar.
"Often regarded as one of the greatest symphonies, we cannot wait to bring Dvořák's ninth symphony, 'From the New World,' to the DeVos Hall stage," Grand Rapids Symphony said in a Jan. 27 Facebook post.
Grand Rapids Symphony Music Director Marcelo Lehninger is expected to conduct the evening of music.
The concert is scheduled Feb. 4-5 at 8.pm both nights at the at DeVos Performance Hall at 303 Monroe Ave NW in Grand Rapids.
In addition to Dvořák's famous No. 9, attendees also can expect to hear Stephenson's "Fanfare for Democracy," Shekhar's "Hate the Sin, Love the Sinner" and Copeland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" and "Suite from Our Town."
Attendees also may attend a pre-concert "Inside the Music" lecture at 7 p.m. both days. The informative pre-concert talk is intended to provide context for the evening's performance and is geared toward first-time concert-goers as much as concert aficionados. The pre-concert lecture is free to all ticket holders.
Lehninger, who led the Grand Rapids Symphony’s pre-COVID return to Carnegie Hall in 2018, now is in his fourth season as the symphony's music director. He recently signed a five-year contract renewal, which means his work for Grand Rapids Symphony is expected to extend through the 2025-26 season, according to his bio on the Grand Rapids Symphony website.
Grand Rapids Symphony is presenting the concert experience while following current health and safety guidelines for attendance, including entry vaccination checkpoints and masks.
