The Michigan Retailers Association awarded state Rep. Lynn Afendoulis (R-Grand Rapids Township) the Legislator of the Year award.

The award was given to Afendoulis and Rep. Joe Tate (D-Detroit) for bringing Michigan retailers fair sales tax through legislation. The legislation would make it so online retailers outside of Michigan have to collect sales tax for all purchases made online in Michigan.

The legislation was brought forward after Afendoulis received a concern that online retailers outside of Michigan had an unfair competitive advantage. The concerned citizen said that customers would look at items in his business, then purchase the items online from out-of-state businesses to avoid Michigan’s sales tax.

“This was an Amazon-versus-Main Street Michigan bill and I’m proud to have helped create an even playing field for Michigan retailers,” Afendoulis said in a statement. “I am so honored the MRA chose me for this recognition and I pledge to continue to work with them on behalf of the people of our state to grow and improve our Michigan economy.”
