Hillary Scholten addresses impact of government shutdown on Michigan communities

Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, who represents Michigan’s 3rd district in the U.S. Congress, has expressed concern over the ongoing government shutdown and its impact on various sectors through a series of posts on social media.

On November 2, 2025, Scholten addressed the effect of the shutdown on aviation employees and air travel, stating: "I’m deeply concerned about the impacts that the shutdown is having on our aviation employees as well as our air travel. 

Republicans must get back to work and do their jobs to end this shutdown ASAP. There is no time to waste."

Later that day, she highlighted the consequences for small businesses, writing: "Our small businesses are the cornerstone of our economy, and the government shutdown is hitting them hard. I’m staying in constant conversation with groups like @MichiganSBDC to ensure that their voices are heard and their needs are met during this chaotic moment in our nation’s" (November 2, 2025).

On November 3, Scholten focused on support for SNAP recipients in Michigan: "SNAP supports Michiganders from every corner of our state, and every walk of life.

- Nearly 60% are families with children.

- Nearly 40% are families with members who are older or disabled.

- Over 45% are in working families.

These folks deserve our support, and @USDA has the" (November 3, 2025).

Hillary Scholten began representing Michigan's 3rd district in Congress after succeeding Peter Meijer in 2023. She was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1982 and continues to reside there. Scholten holds a BA from Gordon College (2004) and earned her JD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2011.
