In a post published on October 13, 2025, Scholten wrote, "On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we recognize the resilience of Indigenous Peoples and the injustices they’ve experienced throughout history. I stand with our Native communities today and always in their continued fight for justice."
Later that day, she addressed the resolution of a period of captivity with the statement, "Welcome home. Celebrating an end to this devastating period of captivity today as we continue to work toward lasting peace for tomorrow and the years to come." In another message on October 13, Scholten focused on federal recognition for tribal communities: "This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, let us continue working toward getting our tribes the federal recognition they deserve. Scholten has served in Congress since 2023 after replacing Peter Meijer as the representative for Michigan's 3rd district. Born in Grand Rapids in 1982, Scholten has maintained close ties to her community. She holds a BA from Gordon College and a JD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
The Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians have sought federal recognition for years; such acknowledgment would provide access to additional resources and legal status from the U.S. government.
