Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, who represents Michigan’s 3rd district, has recently used her social media platform to address concerns about the ongoing federal government shutdown and the potential impact on health care premiums for West Michigan families.

On October 12, 2025, Scholten commented on the effects of the shutdown, stating, "As this shutdown continues, it’s disappointing to see more and more federal workers furloughed or worrying about whether they’re going to get their next paycheck." She also emphasized her office’s commitment to supporting constituents during this period. In a subsequent post on the same day, she said, "Regardless of the situation, my office is here to assist with any issues related to a federal agency. Later that evening, Scholten turned attention to the future of health care premiums in her district. She wrote, "West Michigan families are anticipating that their health care premiums could double, or even triple, starting in 2026. This is a Republican-manufactured health care crisis that they could end TODAY by doing something 78% of Americans support… extending the ACA tax credits."

Scholten has served in Congress since 2023, succeeding Peter Meijer as the representative for Michigan’s 3rd district. Born in Grand Rapids in 1982, Scholten continues to reside in the city. She holds a BA from Gordon College and a JD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
