Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, who represents Michigan’s 3rd district in the U.S. Congress, has recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing federal funding for health research, upcoming community events, and the ongoing government shutdown.

On October 10, 2025, Scholten criticized recent cuts to medical research funding, stating, "Constituents of mine like Adam may not be alive today without @NIH research and care. And yet, @HouseGOP and President Trump are decimating NIH funding to the tune of $280 million next year. It’s unconscionable, and folks like Adam are going to suffer because of it."

The following day, Scholten announced an event for students interested in military service: "West Michigan, this Monday, October 13th, Team Scholten is hosting a Service Academy Night in Grand Haven for interested students to learn more about the U.S. Service Academies, the nomination process, and opportunities to serve. RSVP at https://t.co/sjB87tfPAC. Visit https://t.co/2nyjwv4ECj" (October 11).

Later on October 11, she addressed the government shutdown: "President Trump and Republicans created an unprecedented health care crisis and then shut down the government instead of working with Democrats to fix it. Now they are trying to make that shutdown as painful as possible for furloughed federal workers."

Scholten began serving as a member of Congress in 2023 after succeeding Peter Meijer. She was born in Grand Rapids in 1982 and continues to reside there. Scholten earned her undergraduate degree from Gordon College in 2004 before receiving her law degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2011.
