Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, who represents Michigan’s 3rd district in the U.S. Congress, has addressed constituents regarding her continued efforts during the recent federal government shutdown and her advocacy for Coast Guard members.

On September 30, 2025, Scholten posted on social media: "I’ll never stop fighting for our Coasties, especially during the uncertainty of a government shutdown. That’s why I’m championing the Pay Our Coast Guard Parity Act, which would ensure that every @USCG member could support themselves and their families in the event of a shutdown."

Following the official start of the government shutdown, Scholten updated her constituents on October 1, 2025: "West Michigan, the federal government has shut down, but I’m still fighting for you. No matter what, my office is OPEN and here to help you through this. Please keep this website as a resource for any issues that may arise because of the government shutdown, and feel free to https://t.co/yUOlmegj9Q"

Later that day she commented on legislative priorities in Congress: "Let’s think back to July: @HouseGOP rushed a vote on the so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill” to deliver tax breaks and corporate welfare to their billionaire buddies to the tune of $700 per day. Now, when the health and livelihood of hardworking, everyday Americans are on the line,"

Scholten has represented Michigan's 3rd district since replacing Peter Meijer in 2023. She was born in Grand Rapids in 1982 and continues to reside there. Scholten earned her BA from Gordon College in 2004 and obtained a JD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2011.
