Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, who represents Michigan’s 3rd district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of tweets on September 17, 2025, addressing recent congressional actions and policies related to presidential emergency powers and tariffs.

In one tweet, Scholten highlighted the legislative process for ending an emergency declaration: "Importantly, Congress can terminate an emergency declaration with a 'joint resolution,' which is a measure passed by the House and Senate. @HouseDemocrats and a few Republicans came together on a joint resolution that would terminate the President's current national emergency." (September 17, 2025)

She also commented on former President Donald Trump’s use of executive authority under federal law: "President Trump has enforced his sweeping tariffs under the 'National Emergencies Act,' which empowers the president to activate special powers during a crisis. President Trump uses these powers at a rate no previous peacetime president has come close to." (September 17, 2025)

In another post from the same day, Scholten criticized her Republican colleagues in the House: "I am continually surprised at the lengths my @HouseGOP colleagues will go to in order to protect the whims and wishes of President Trump. Even when his policies hurt their own constituents, they continue to bend the knee." (September 17, 2025)

Hillary Scholten has served as Michigan’s 3rd District representative since replacing Peter Meijer in 2023. She was born in Grand Rapids in 1982 and continues to reside there. Scholten holds degrees from Gordon College and the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
