Ferris State University's women's golf team remains in the running after the second day of play at the NCAA Division II East Regional Championships. The event is being held at The Meadows Golf Course in Allendale. On Tuesday, Ferris State posted a team score of 313, placing them eighth overall after two rounds in the 18-team competition. They had recorded a 316 in the first round on Monday and are currently five shots away from fifth place as they head into the final round.
Grand Valley State leads with an overall score of 588, followed by Findlay at 592, Tiffin at 617, Missouri-St. Louis at 622, and Indianapolis at 624 to round out the top five. Wayne State is sixth with a score of 625, Saginaw Valley State seventh with 628, and Ferris State eighth with 629. The top five teams will advance to the D2 National Championships.
Kamryn Shannon from Ferris State is tied for eighth place individually with a total score of 150, having shot a 76 in the first round and improving to a 74 on Tuesday. Susie Gietl and Lizzie Anderson are both tied for 38th place with scores of 159 each; Gietl shot an 80 following her initial round of 79 while Anderson improved from an opening round of 82 to a second-round score of 77.
Ashley Thomasma scored an 83 in her second round and stands tied for 57th with an overall score of 162 after shooting a first-round score of 79. Kylie Walker is tied for 69th position with consistent scores of back-to-back rounds of 82 totaling to an overall score of 164.
The final round is scheduled for Wednesday. All competitors will complete all three rounds totaling to play through all holes available in this regional competition. The top five teams along with two individuals not on advancing teams will move forward to compete in the national championships set for May from May13-17 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada.
This year marks Ferris State's fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional Championships. Three years ago, they finished eleventh during their first postseason team trip since finishing fourth back in their last regional championship run in2014. Historically, Ferris has won two regional championships (2003-04 and2006-07) while also achieving runner-up status four times between2004-09.
