Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University's softball team concluded their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular season with a win and a loss on Sunday at Parkside in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Bulldogs defeated the Rangers 5-1 in the first game but were overpowered in the second game, losing 11-2.
This outcome leaves Ferris State with a 27-17 overall record, the most wins for the program in nine years, and a 16-12 record in the conference.
In the first game, Ferris State gained an early advantage by scoring three runs in the first inning and added another two in the third. Parkside scored their lone run in the seventh inning. The Bulldogs had six hits to Parkside's three.
"The Bulldogs captured a 5-1 win in the opener," with sophomore first baseman Alexis Kozlowski securing three hits and an RBI. Second baseman Jadyn Joseph chipped in with two hits and scored twice. Brooklyn Verbeek, a senior third baseman, contributed a hit, while Joseph also managed a double.
Ferris State's Catherine O'Donohue pitched two innings, allowing only a single hit with no runs and three walks. Ella Covill-Marter pitched the remaining five innings, relinquishing just one run on two hits along with three walks and a strikeout, which earned her the win.
In game two, Parkside reversed their fortunes with a strong performance at the plate, achieving 10 hits to Ferris State's seven. The Rangers scored two runs in the second inning, three in the third, and six in the fourth. Ferris State managed only two runs in the fifth inning.
Joseph and Kozlowski both had two hits and a double each, each driving in a run, while Emma Gillard, Bailey McCalister, and Ella McDonald each secured a hit.
Cecelia Bell pitched two innings for the Bulldogs, allowing two earned runs on four hits, with two strikeouts and one walk. O'Donohue and Covill-Marter also pitched, with O'Donohue giving up four runs on three hits, while Covill-Marter allowed five runs on three hits.
The Bulldogs are now set to play as the third seed in the conference tournament. They will face sixth-seeded Roosevelt on Thursday, May 1st, at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Illinois.
