Ferris State University's softball team secured a split in their doubleheader against Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday, April 19, in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Bulldogs fell in the first game 3-2 but recovered with a 7-3 victory in the second game.
Following the split, Ferris State holds a 24-14 overall record and a 13-9 mark in league play, positioning themselves directly behind Saginaw Valley, who leads the conference.
In the opening game, Ferris State managed to shut out their opponents for six innings, but Saginaw Valley scored three runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Ferris State responded with two runs in the sixth but was unable to close the gap and recorded only four hits compared to Saginaw Valley's seven. Alexis Kozlowski led Ferris State with three hits, driving in both runs. Catherine O'Donohue pitched six innings in the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits with five walks and two strikeouts, while Cecelia Bell pitched the final two and one-third innings without allowing a run.
The Bulldogs rebounded in the second game with a strong four-run inning in the fourth. Despite Saginaw Valley's attempts to catch up, Ferris State added one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to secure their win. Paige Antcliff contributed two hits and three RBIs for Ferris State, with Kozlowski adding two hits and Breanna Blair and Maddie Gkekas each driving in a run.
Ella Covill-Marter earned the win for Ferris State, allowing one run on three hits over four innings, while O'Donohue and Bell combined to close the game.
The Bulldogs will next face Wayne State at home in a doubleheader on April 22, with the first game starting at 3 p.m. ET, as part of their Senior Day celebrations.
