Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University's men's golf team remains in contention at the 2025 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships after the first round of play in Augusta, Mich.
The Ferris State Bulldogs posted a one-over-par score of 289, tying for fifth place after 18 holes at the Bedford Valley Golf Club, where 10 schools are competing. Grand Valley State leads the event with a 283, followed by Wayne State with a 284, and Roosevelt with a 287. Saginaw Valley State holds fourth place with a 288, while Ferris State is part of a three-way tie for fifth alongside Davenport and Parkside.
"There are only six strokes separating the top seven teams in the standings, leading into the second round," noted officials. The event structure allows the top four teams to advance after 36 holes of stroke play spanning Friday and Saturday. The low four out of five scores are counted for each school.
After round two, the leading four teams will move to a head-to-head medal play on Saturday afternoon, continuing to Sunday to determine the GLIAC Champion. Ferris State, last year’s defending winner, is looking to defend its title.
Individual Bulldog performances included Sam Havey, scoring a 69, tying for second place overall. Teammates Drayton Cleaver and McCoy Biagioli each recorded 73, tying for 17th. Kole Putnam shot a 74, tied for 25th, and Zach Koerner scored a 76, tying for 35th.
Overall, Ferris State's men's golf history includes 22 GLIAC titles and they last captured back-to-back medal match victories in 2019 and 2021. Round two is set to begin on Saturday at 9 a.m. (ET).
