Brooklyn Verbeek, a senior at Ferris State University and a third baseman on the softball team, is concluding her college sports journey with no regrets about her decision to join Ferris State. "I love it at Ferris State and have no regrets about coming here," Verbeek stated, emphasizing her satisfaction.

Part of her happiness stems from contributing to the reestablishment of Ferris State's softball program under head coach Jake Schumann's leadership. Verbeek recalled, "When Coach Schumann came to the program, his biggest thing was creating a successful culture." She credited the team for fostering a supportive environment: "We have a team of great leaders, athletes, and people. We're all super motivated with great work ethic. We're there for each other on and off the field."

The Bulldogs have seen an uptick in performance, with Verbeek playing an instrumental role. So far this season, Verbeek is batting .260 and contributing both offensively and defensively. She embraces a leadership role among her teammates, saying, "Confidence is important in softball. You've got to have confidence in yourself and in your team."

Since entering the program, Verbeek has witnessed a marked improvement in the team's record, moving from 19 wins in 2022 to 23 in 2023, and 25 in 2024. As of April 7, the Bulldogs already have 19 wins this season, with 16 regular-season games remaining.

Aside from sports, Verbeek chose Ferris State for its academic programs, specifically the child life concentration. "I picked Ferris because it offers the child life concentration. Many other colleges in Michigan don't," she noted. This spring, she is set to graduate Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education.

Verbeek is passionate about becoming a child life specialist, focused on aiding children in hospitals. She summarized her future aspiration: "Working with children in this manner is something I am excited to pursue."

Apart from academics and sports, 2025 is pivotal for Verbeek personally, as she plans to marry Brady Haisma on October 3. "Planning a wedding while being a college athlete is no joke, but I wouldn't have it any other way," she shared.

The Bulldogs' upcoming match is a doubleheader against Grand Valley State, set for April 12.
