Ferris State University's tennis teams began their Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) season with victories over Lake Superior State University at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center. The women's team narrowly won 4-3, while the men's team secured a 5-2 win.
In the women's match, Ferris State trailed initially after LSSU won the first two doubles flights. However, Yara Madi and Aimee Reynoso achieved a 6-4 victory in three doubles. During singles play, Ferris State claimed four of six matches. Madi and Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer both won in three sets at third and fourth singles, respectively. Reynoso triumphed 6-0, 6-1 at fifth singles, while Katherine Earnest clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at sixth singles.
The men's team also overcame an early deficit after losing the doubles point to LSSU. Despite Kevin Kovacs and Erik Kovacs winning at number one doubles with a score of 6-3, LSSU captured victories in second and third doubles for an initial lead. In response, Ferris State won five out of six singles matches. Kevin Kovacs emerged victorious at first singles; Alessandro Santangelo and Erik Kovacs each secured wins in three-set matches at second and third singles. Jose Andres Perez Alarcon and Adrian Catahan finished with straight-set wins in fifth and sixth singles.
These results improve the Bulldog women's record to 6-5 this season, while the men's team stands at 7-5. Both teams will continue GLIAC competition next week against Grand Valley State on Friday (March 28) and Davenport on Saturday (March 29), hosting both events in Big Rapids.
