Ferris State University tennis teams concluded their weekend matches with a split against Findlay on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids, Michigan. The men's team secured their first win of the season with a 5-2 victory, while the women's team experienced their first loss in a 6-1 decision.
The Ferris State squads had previously achieved a sweep in their home opener against Tiffin on Saturday. FSU head coach Mark Doren expressed optimism despite the women's team's loss. "Although this was our first lost of the season for the women's team, I thought we played some really good tennis today," he said. "I believe Finley is the top team in the Midwest region this year and we pushed them really well today. Even with the loss, I think we will go forward with more confidence next weekend."
Coach Doren also praised the men's team's performance over the weekend: "It was great to get the weekend sweep for the men's team," he noted. "It was a much needed weekend against two really good teams. Today I'm most happy with the way we played doubles. We've been talking about bringing extra energy and being more aggressive. And that's what they did today."
In Sunday's match, Ferris State's men claimed victory by winning key doubles points through Kevin and Erik Kovacs at number one flight and Alessandro Santangelo and Kacper Pasielak at two doubles. In singles play, Kevin Kovacs triumphed at one singles, Santangelo won at two singles, Erik Kovacs succeeded at five singles, and Adrian Catahan emerged victorious at six singles—all in straight sets.
On the women's side, despite losing the doubles point overall, Yara Madi and Aimee Reynoso clinched a win at third flight doubles with a 6-4 scoreline. Madi also secured Ferris State's only singles win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at three singles.
After this weekend's results, Ferris State's women hold a 3-1 record while the men are now 2-2 overall. Both teams are set to compete again on Saturday, Feb. 15, against McKendree (Ill.) in Indianapolis.
