Mike Eaton, the head bowling coach at Davenport University, has passed away after battling cancer. He died on March 22, surrounded by his family. Paul Lowden, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, expressed the university's grief: "We are heartbroken and devastated by the passing of Mike Eaton." He praised Eaton as a beloved figure in both the DU community and the bowling world.

Eaton started coaching Davenport's men's and women's bowling teams in the 2014-15 season. Under his leadership, both teams became strong competitors regionally and nationally. In the recent 2022-23 season, the women's team ranked eighth and the men's team fifteenth nationally according to the United States Bowling Congress (USBC). The women's team finished fifth and the men's team eighth at sectionals, with three bowlers qualifying for Intercollegiate Singles Championships in Las Vegas.

Ryan McCosky, Director of Non-Varsity Sports and Programming, described Eaton as more than just a coach: "He was a husband, a father, a friend, a mentor, an entrepreneur and more." McCosky offered condolences to Eaton's family and those affected by his loss.

After Davenport joined NCAA Division II and left the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC), Eaton led the program into its new conference affiliation with the Great Lakes Bowling Conference (GLBC) in 2021-22. Both teams finished second in their inaugural GLBC season.

Eaton guided his teams to top finishes in sectionals over several years. His notable achievements include being inducted into the USBC Greater Grand Rapids Hall of Fame in 2005. His personal bowling accomplishments feature three perfect games and numerous tournament titles.

Counseling services are available through Davenport University's Wellness Center for students needing support during this time. A celebration of life will be held on April 14 at Spectrum Lanes from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
