Shon Stephens, a standout defensive back from Ferris State University, has accepted an invitation to participate in the Philadelphia Eagles' rookie mini camp. This opportunity follows the conclusion of the NFL Draft held in Detroit.
Stephens, who hails from Bakersfield, California, was recognized for his performance during his single season with the Bulldogs. He was named to the 2023 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America Second Team. His selection marked the ninth consecutive year that Ferris State had at least one player chosen for this honor. Additionally, Stephens was a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award, which is given to the nation's top small college defensive player.
During his time with Ferris State, Stephens made significant contributions on the field. He was part of the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) All-Super Region Three First Team and earned accolades as the GLIAC Defensive Back of the Year. In 2023, he intercepted eight passes and scored two touchdowns, including a notable 100-yard kickoff return. Stephens ranked second nationally in interceptions per game and recorded 43 total tackles.
Ferris State's football program has seen consistent success in recent years, reaching the NCAA Division II Playoffs for nine straight seasons—the longest active streak in Division II football. The Bulldogs have also produced numerous players who have participated in NFL camps over recent summers.
In addition to Stephens' recent achievement, former Ferris State players continue to make their mark in professional football. Notably, Zach Sieler became Ferris State's first-ever NFL Draft pick when selected by the Baltimore Ravens six years ago. Currently, four Bulldog alumni are affiliated with NFL teams: Tavierre Thomas (Tampa Bay), Zach Sieler (Miami), Malik Taylor (New York Jets), and Caleb Murphy (Tennessee).
The legacy of Ferris State players extends beyond these individuals as many others have signed free agent contracts or received tryout invitations over the years.
