The Ferris State University women's volleyball team is preparing for an overseas trip that will serve as both a cultural and athletic experience. The Bulldogs, who have consistently reached the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen in recent years, are set to depart on May 5 for a 10-day journey to Spain and Portugal.
FSU head coach Tia Brandel-Wilhelm highlighted the benefits of the trip, stating, "The chance to spend 10 days in another country with our team is fantastic in terms of the team building that will come out of it." She added that facing international teams will present challenges but also opportunities for personal growth and leadership.
The team has been actively fundraising to cover expenses such as airfare, accommodations, meals, and local travel. Supporters contributing over $1,000 will receive personalized updates from the Bulldogs during their travels.
FSU junior outside hitter Tatum Outlaw expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming trip: "Overall, we're just really excited for the experience and the opportunity to experience new things. This is a once in a lifetime experience."
Syann Fairfield, another key player, shared her excitement: "I'm really excited to travel with the team, get to see new things and play volleyball in other countries."
The Bulldogs' successful past season included reaching the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen and winning the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLAIC) Tournament Championship. With most of their roster returning for the fall 2024 season, this trip aims to prepare them further by offering exposure to different playing styles abroad.
Hannah Tecumseh said about the upcoming experience: "This trip will give us the chance to face a higher level of competition in Europe and going overseas will help us grow as a team going into the season."
