Redhawks begin the season 3-0, the first time since 1998!

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (GRPS) — For the first time since 1998, the Union High School football team has begun its season with a perfect 3-0 record. The Redhawks took down the Wyoming Wolves this past weekend 48-20 to stay undefeated to start the 2022 campaign.

As players and coaches celebrated on the field, head coach Don Fellows took a minute to both take in the celebratory scene and reflect on what it’s taken thus far to get to this point.

“I am so happy for our players, our school and our city,” an animated Fellows said after the win. “Our players have worked extremely hard over the last three years and have been fully committed. We are excited for the future of our football program.”

Fellows added that the Redhawks trained vigorously all summer to build up their strength and prepare for the 2022 season. That training paid off in week three against Wyoming.

For Kurt Johnson, Grand Rapids Public Schools Executive Director of Athletics & Dual Enrollment, the effort on the field is also what is expected of GRPS scholars in the classroom.

“It’s been a long time coming, and we know improvement is a process,” he said. “But what we are witnessing is what we know happens when high quality staff – whether it’s coaches or teachers – first believes in the scholars that they are working with, thus causing the scholars in turn to believe in themselves. The football field and all other sports are really identical to the classroom in terms of teaching and learning, so we can only expect even greater things moving forward.”

The Union team aims to continue this winning streak as they put in more hours of hard work and dedication at practices this week. With Red Hawk spectators showing their school spirit and cheering on their classmates at each game, the team is eager to reach their next victory at their away game on Saturday at Reeths-Puffer High School (1545 North Roberts Rd. Muskegon, MI 49445) at 7 p.m..
