GRAND RAPIDS PUBLIC SCHOOLS: Hosting Read By Grade 3 Parent Meetings

Meetingparent

Grand Rapids Public Schools issued the following announcement on Nov. 6.

In order for students to be college and career ready, it is important that they have strong literacy skills. We know that one of the biggest predictors of literary success is a child’s ability to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade. Grand Rapids Public Schools has placed an extra focus on 3rd grade reading for the past several years.

In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed a law related to 3rd grade reading. The law requires that students pass a state test at the end of 3rd grade in order to move on to 4th grade. This portion of the law takes effect in the 2019-2020 school year. We've created a guide and resources for you, to ensure that your child is ready to read by grade 3!

In order for students, parents, and families to be ready, we have scheduled meetings throughout the district during the school year. Each meeting will cover the same information, including resources to help better understand the law, how to support early reading and literacy with resources, and answer your questions: as a parent, what do you need to know about Read by Grade 3? How will this affect your child? What is the district doing to support your student in school and what can you do to support at home? Each meeting includes free snacks/refreshments, childcare, and interpreters.
