GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — U.S. Senator Gary Peters made a stop in Grand Rapids on Aug. 9, 2019, as part of his annual motorcycle ride across the state.
While in West Michigan, Peters said Congress needs to act on gun control legislation.
“100 people today will die of gun violence. May not make the news, but 100 people will die. I'm a gun owner, I believe in the Second Amendment Rights, but I also believe we should have common sense legislation and one of those pieces of legislation would be comprehensive background checks. It is something 90% of the American people believe we should do, over 70% of NRA members think we should do," he said.
He says while this past weekend's mass shootings were tragic and that gun violence is an epidemic that impacts people daily.
Peters said he isn’t endorsing any of the Democratic candidates, but did talk about the primary.
“I think it's important to have a vibrant primary, an exchange of ideas that comes out of an active primary. And I'm confident whoever comes out, whoever he or she is, will be an outstanding nominee to be the next President of the United States,” he said.
He also talked about his support for the investigations into President Donald Trump.
“It's a constitutional duty to be a check on the President. You need to be asking tough questions and continuing to investigate. But I think it's important we continue to do the work that we need to do here for the people of this country,” Peters said.
Peters also made a stop at the Grand Ledge Armory where he discussed national security.
