Applications are now open for the City of Grand Rapids' GRow1000 Summer Youth Employment Program, offering young people the chance to earn money while gaining valuable workplace skills. According to City Manager Mark Washington, the program is a great opportunity for the city's youth to explore career pathways and prepare for future success.
The program aims to hire nearly 200 individuals aged 15 to 24, who will earn $13 per hour for 20 hours of work per week. In addition to work experience, participants will also benefit from workshops focusing on customer service, growth mindset, peer learning, and networking.
Reflecting on her experience in the program, Ah’Nyah D. praised the coordinator and employers for their effective delegation of responsibilities, stating, "I cannot think of a way to enhance the experience."
The GRow1000 program, established in response to the challenges posed by the global pandemic in 2020, has provided meaningful summer jobs to almost 1,000 youth since its inception. The City of Grand Rapids and Our Community’s Children will continue to oversee and manage the program in 2024.
Mayor Rosalynn Bliss encouraged businesses to participate in the program, emphasizing the positive impact it can have on both the youth and the businesses themselves. She stated, "Creating opportunities for youth has a direct and lasting impact on their lives."
Businesses and organizations can engage with the GRow1000 program by offering support in various ways, including providing employment opportunities for young individuals.
