Listen. Learn. Lead: State of the Student Educators and Students Provide Update on School Experience

Students and educators from public school districts in Kent ISD came together Monday, October 24 to share their experiences in education and updates on initiatives with area business and community leaders.

“We are committed to elevating student voice so we can better meet their needs.  When we listen to our students and learn from them, we can lead efforts to do incredible things to serve their needs and create thriving communities,” said Ron Koehler, superintendent of Kent ISD.

Scholars from Grand Rapids Public Schools, Northview, East Grand Rapids and Comstock Park made up a student panel who answered questions from moderator Maranda of WOOD TV and ABC4 West Michigan. Topics covered included academic recovery following the pandemic, addressing mental wellness, support systems available in school settings and changes students would like to see.

“Having a chance to share our voices and tell adults what it’s really like to be a student today is so valuable. We really appreciate the chance to be heard and have our ideas taken seriously,” said Terrell Daniels, Jr., senior at Union High School in Grand Rapids.

Superintendents from East Grand Rapids, Caledonia, Grand Rapids, Cedar Springs and Kentwood shared initiatives schools are implementing now to meet the academic, mental wellness and other needs of students in public districts throughout Kent ISD.

"It's important that we continue to listen to our students so we can address their needs and provide support and opportunities that help them reach their greatest potential,” said Kevin Polston, Superintendent, Kentwood Public Schools.

The inaugural Listen. Learn. Lead. State of the Student event brought together nearly 300 community members and featured scholars involved in the Student Leadership Community, a group of more than 40 high school students representing each of Kent ISD’s 20 public school districts.
